Rin Tin Tin Outraged at Deception
September 16, 2008 ~ Rin Tin Tin cautions consumers to not be mislead by the Tuesday, September 16, 2008 release in the United States by First Look Studios (Pictures) of a movie on DVD titled "Finding Rin Tin Tin."
The movie was filmed in Sofia, Bulgaria between January 25, 2006 and February 28, 2006 and the German Shepherd Dogs used were provided by Lary Mak in Bulgaria and in no way connected to or endorsed by the Authentic Rin Tin Tin dogs.
"I am deeply saddened and distressed to see this film company intentionally deceive the public by representing the dogs they used in the movie as Rin Tin Tin," said Miss Daphne Hereford, owner/breeder of Rin Tin Tin and Trademarks associated with the canine icon.
"For more than 9 decades and 10 generations, Rin Tin Tin and his direct line descendants that have continued the Rin Tin Tin bloodline have been highly respected and sought after. I fear this action by the production company will not only confuse the public but tarnish the Rin Tin Tin dogs good name and reputation."
"Through our attorney we made several attempts to discuss the matter with First Look Studios but they were non-responsive, Miss Hereford added.
Some years ago a similar situation arose with Lassie when a production company tried to substitute non-genetic line dogs that were not direct descendants of the original Lassie in the filming of the series in Canada. Fans rallied to the deception and sent letters, faxes and emails to the production company expressing their outrage at the deception. As a result, original direct genetic descendant line dogs of the original Lassie were returned to the series.
"We ask for the public's support in protesting this deception and bringing the matter to a postive conclusion that will ensure the good name of Rin Tin Tin dogs is not tarnished nor the consuming public deceived," Miss Hereford said.
We encourage the consuming public to boycott the release of this film on DVD and express their outrage at the deception by sending their comments directly to the production and distribution company.

Rin Tin Tin Celebrates 90th Birthday
September 10, 2008 ~ This day will mark the 90th Birthday of Rin Tin Tin.
Considered by many to be the oldest continous bloodline in the history of the breed, the original Rin Tin Tin was found in a bombed German War Dog Kennel in Lorraine, France by Cpl. Lee Duncan on September 15, 1918.
Following World War I in November 1918, Duncan returned to the United States with Rin Tin Tin and his litter sister Nannette. Nannette died soon after from distemper, but Rin Tin Tin went on to become one of Hollywood's greatest stars of the 1920s.
The original Rin Tin Tin died on August 10, 1932, but the legacy continued with his son Junior who was featured in several serials in the 1930s and 1940s.
Duncan used Rin Tin Tin III (#3) to train dogs for the military at the onset of World War II.
Rin Tin Tin II (#2) and Rin Tin Tin IV (#4) appeared in the 1950s series, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin.
Duncan died on September 20, 1960 but not before the lineage was passed to the current owner's family in 1957.

Rinty Goes to War By Geoff Pattison
University of Northumbria England
May 2007 ~ At the Imperial War Museum in London England there has been staged a unique and fascinating exhibition entitled "The Animals of War".
On display is an unbelievable collection of animals including rats, bats, pigs, sharks, dolphins, cats, elephants, mules, as well as birds portraying their own remarkable bravery and at the same time assisting their country, in its time of need. Pigeons believe or not were parachuted like secret agents behind enemy lines, while dogs later where to follow a similar means of arrival.
Its seems almost any creature could be enlisted to help with the war effort, even glow worms were deemed a priority, to assist with map reading.
With reference to dogs there is Judy an English pointer who was awarded The Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of The Victoria Cross for outstanding bravery.
Judy was the only animal to have been an official P.O.W. of the Japanese during the Second World War.
Irma a German shepherd dog also received a Dickin Medal for her valiant efforts in finding buried victims after the air aids in war torn London.
Also on display and with due recognition Rin Tin Tin is represented with a series of items including the Red Cross harness and canine training boots worn by Rin Tin Tin Junior. A video of Rin Tin Tin in action from one of his movies entices the viewer to find out more about Rinty"s involvement. He feels totally at home here with his animal friends.
A wonderful book by Juliet Gardiner titled "The Animals" War" accompanies the exhibition and is well worth buying. It shows how man's best friend can become man"s best ally.
This exhibition in London closes on April 22 nd but reopens at the Imperial War Museum in Manchester England in the summer of 2007.

Rin Tin Tin Leads Denver Parade
Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007 ~ Rin Tin Tin took a stroll around downtown Denver late Monday afternoon.
After a morning of mostly lounging around his hotel room, he went for a chilly walk around Skyline Park, rested on a mound of snow behind the Federal Reserve Bank and checked out the folks waiting for a bus on 15th Street.
Just the sort of thing you might expect of a celebrity dog about town, getting ready for his job today as grand marshal of the National Western Stock Show Parade.
"What a beautiful dog," a woman at the bus stop remarked as she petted the 3-year-old, dark silver gray German shepherd, whose official pedigree name is Rin Tin Tin Rin Tin Tin III, also known as Rin Tin Tin X.
"Thank you," replied Dorothy Yanchak, of Pearland, Texas, who handles the dog whose lineage can be traced back to the original Rin Tin Tin.
Yanchak is the great-granddaughter of Jannettia Brodsgaard Propps, who acquired four of the original Rinty's offspring from Lee Duncan.
Duncan was a U.S. Army corporal when he found a German shepherd and her litter in a bombed-out kennel in Lorraine, France, on Sept. 15, 1918, during World War I.
He brought two of the puppies back to the United States and named them Rintintin and Nennette, after the 1-inch French puppets that were given to doughboys for good luck.
Nennette died after arriving in the U.S., but Duncan took the other pup, whom he renamed Rin Tin Tin, to Hollywood, where, after some persistence, he landed the dog a part in a film by a struggling movie studio known as Warner Bros.
That dog became a major movie celebrity, starring in 26 films and getting up to 10,000 fan letters a week before he died, in August 1932.
Most baby boomers are more familiar with four of his descendants, who starred in the television show The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, which first aired on ABC from 1954- 59.
The latest Rin Tin Tin, also known to Yanchak as Micah, took over the public performer role after his uncle suffered an ear injury.
He typically makes appearances at day-care centers and hospitals, Yanchak said. He also is trained as a service dog for children with disabilities, such as seizure disorders.
This will be "Rinty's" first trip to Denver and his first stint as a parade marshal.
Stock show spokeswoman Kati Anderson said several candidates were considered for the role, but Rin Tin Tin seemed to best fit the bill.
"We're honoring animals as the most magnificent creatures on Earth," Anderson said. "We thought to have a dog as the parade marshal would be a good fit."
Rinty also is calling attention to several of the canine events that are part of the stock show calendar, including an agility contest, stock dog trials and a "super dog" show.
None of this celebrity stuff seemed to concern Rin Tin Tin. The dog appeared more interested in a performance art installation in the 1500 block of Curtis Street that features sound effects coming from a sidewalk grate. On Monday, his ears perked to the sound of a whippoorwill.
"Earlier it was pigs and cows," Yanchak said. "I was on the phone and starting laughing. What in the world?"
Hey, it's Denver during stock show week. It's all about the animals. Story by John C. Ensslin, Rocky Mountain News Photos courtesy of Will Kelley. |

Lassie visits Rin Tin Tin
June 2005 ~ History was made in a quiet little East Texas town at El Rancho Rin Tin Tin on Father's Day when the canine icons Lassie and Rin Tin Tin appeared together in a public venue for the first time.
Lassie, accompanied by trainer Carol Riggins of Canyon Country, Calif. brought the ninth generation line descendant to meet the eighth generation Rin Tin Tin line descendant at an event held at El Rancho Rin Tin Tin in Latexo, Texas to benefit ARFkids Foundation, incorporated, an organization that provides service dogs to special needs children.
Rin Tin Tin breeder and Trademark owner Daphne Hereford said the two dogs met in a private meeting in California some 60 years ago when Lassie owner Rudd Weatherwax and Rin Tin Tin owner Lee Duncan decided to get together to determine which of the two dogs was the most intelligent. "According to the writings of Lee Duncan, the pair determined that each other's dogs were of equal intelligence," Hereford said.
"The dogs have never appeared together before in a public setting, until now. Both Lassie and Rin Tin Tin are truly remarkable dogs and the style and grace they exhibited when they met was equal to that of world leaders attending a summit. It's as if they knew they were making history," Hereford added.
Riggins, under contract with Classic Media, owner of the Lassie Trademarks, arranged the visit to coincide with a personal appearance by Lassie at the Trademark Licensing Show held in New York, NY. the following week.
Riggins, who has worked with Lassie line dogs for 15 years and is credited with training Lassie IX who appeared in the 1998 Animal Planet series, said, "I am delighted that I had the opportunity to bring Lassie to Texas for this history making event and look forward to a long friendship with Rin Tin Tin and his family."
The 87-year legacy of Rin Tin Tin began when Lee Duncan found the 10-day-old pup in a bombed out German War Dog kennel in Lorraine, France during World War I. Rin Tin Tin went on to make 26 movies and was credited with saving Warner Brothers Pictures from bankruptcy in the 1920s. Hereford has been involved with breeding the Rin Tin Tin line since 1957.
Lassie's history began with Eric Knight's short story "Lassie Come Home" that premiered in the Saturday Evening Post in 1938. The movie followed in 1943 and Lassie debuted on television in 1954 to become a hero to an entire generation. The series won an Emmy for Best Children's Series in 1955 and 1956. A remake of the 1943 film "Lassie Come Home" is currently in production in the United Kingdom.
In a special ceremony, Latexo Mayor Pro-Tem David Goolsby and Councilmember Linda Horton presented a Proclamation to Lassie declaring June 19, 2005 "Lassie Day" in the city.
